Abstract
Outlines factors which influence tile geometric design of rural roads, with emphasis on vertical alignment, and describes the geometric design standards currently recommended for motorways. Discusses phasing of the vertical alignment with the horizontal alignment required to present a visually pleasing design and to avoid the creation of hazards. States a set of phasing rules and describes a computer program that adjusts a vertical alignment so as to phase it with the horizontal alignment according to these rules.
