Abstract
Describes desk studies carried out to determine whether there is justification for the view that steel railway bridges are noisier than concrete ones. Summarises earlier work on light rail systems in urban areas, and includes an extension to cover the applications to railways for high speed trains. Provides general recommendations to ensure that noise emission is moderated, as well as more specific guidance on ballasting, elastomeric mats, and sound-absorbing barriers.
